Electron-Phonon Coupling in MgB2-like Materials: Its Magnitude and Its Limits
نویسنده
چکیده
That very strong coupling of the B-B bond-stretching E2g branch of phonons to the B 2pσ bonding hole states is responsible for the remarkable superconductivity in MgB2 is well established. This entirely new manner of driving the superconducting Tc to high levels requires additional analysis. Here recent findings, such as how this strong coupling is related to possible structural instability, are discussed, and investigation into the practical limits of such coupling is initiated.

The reduced total isotope effect and its implications on the nature of superconductivity in MgB2
The recent discovery of superconductivity at ~39 K in MgB2, by Nagamatsu et al.1 establishes this simple binary compound as having the highest bulk superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of any non-copper-oxide material. Much of the initial research has focused on whether MgB2 is a conventional BCS, electron-phonon mediated superconductor, and, if it is, why Tc is so high. Isotope effect m...

Superconductivity of boron-doped diamond, reported recently at T(c)=4 K, is investigated exploiting its electronic and vibrational analogies to MgB2. The deformation potential of the hole states arising from the C-C bond-stretch mode is 60% larger than the corresponding quantity in MgB2 that drives its high T(c), leading to very large electron-phonon matrix elements. The calculated coupling str...

We present a first principles investigation of the lattice dynamics and electron-phonon coupling of the superconductor MgB2 and the isostructural AlB2 within the framework of density functional perturbation theory using a mixed-basis pseudopotential method. Complete phonon dispersion curves and Eliashberg functions alpha2F are calculated for both systems. The main differences are related to hig...

We present a comparison of electron-phonon interaction in NbB2 and MgB2, calculated using full-potential, density-functional-based methods in P6/mmm crystal structure. Our results, described in terms of (i) electronic structure, (ii) phonon density of states F (ω), (iii) Eliashberg function α2F (ω), and (iv) the solutions of the isotropic Eliashberg gap equation, clearly show significant differ...
